Power Transformer Sealing

Project Overview

Project Name: Leak-Proof flange sealing for oil-filled power transformers

Client / Industry: Power & Energy — Transformer Manufacturing. “A leading Indian Power-Transformer OEM.”

Challenge

Oil-filled transformers run under continuous thermal cycling and internal pressure. Ordinary gaskets take a compression set over time, causing oil seepage at flange joints, insulation stress, and costly field failures. The customer needed a sealing material with high compressibility, excellent recovery, and long-term resistance to transformer oil and temperature swings — supplied in forms that minimise joints.

Solution

Provided BCI supplied Chetak rubberised cork in its transformer grade TR9, engineered to combine cork’s spring-back recovery with rubber’s oil resistance and mechanical strength — delivered as continuous jointless strips and die-cut frames matched to the customer’s flange drawings.

Process / Approach

  • Polymer and grade selection matched to the customer’s oil and temperature specification.
  • Cork granulating, grading and bonding to target density, hardness and compressibility.
  • Custom die-cut frames and continuous jointless strips/rolls to minimise leak paths.
  • Batch testing of compressibility, recovery, tensile strength and oil-volume change before dispatch.

Key Results / Outcomes

The gasket passed their test with regard to oil leakage and compressibility and recovery especially at consistently very high temperatures (more that 100 degrees).
